Happy New Year + a summation

PD - Disbelief!

Hello all, and Happy New Year.  I hope that 2009 is healthy, safe and successful for all.  With that said, the main purpose of this post is to state that I have compiled all the books I've read in the past year, and am ready to report the results.  (Also, this may be the only New Year's resolution from last year that I've kept.  Hee!)

The grand totals are:  318 total books (75 of those books were manga/graphic novels) and 5 short stories (I didn't count these as "books", but I read them nonetheless).

Fairly impressive, if not quite a book a day (which is what I had estimated).  I am eagerly looking forward to recording what I read next year as well.  Under the cut is a list of the titles.

Tw - skin of a killer

Why in the name of all that is righteous and holy would you call my small local library to see if an item that was placed on hold with SOMEONE ELSE'S WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY library card has arrived?!?  Libraries are not magic, no matter how much they may seem to be so.  (Wow, that was a tortured sentence construction!)  I have absolutely no way of knowing whether something has arrived, PARTICULARLY if the patron record is NOT AT OUR LIBRARY.  Also, perhaps if the person ordered it with their Wayne State card, it might arrive (when it does so, in good time) AT WAYNE STATE!!! Gah!

On the other hand, enjoy my awesome Twilight lolfan icon.  Hee!  *flounce*

Sometimes I just plain love my job.  An example:  today, I got to utter the sentence "Actually, I believe the giant snail is when he goes to the moon." and have it be both the answer to a question AND a true statement.

Who knew that wishing could get you anything?

As I was typing my last entry, it turns out that my brother had, in fact, come home.

I am happy.  (still waiting on the coffee though)

I wish I had a damn cup of coffee because I'm cold and tired and it is BORING in the library today.

I wish someone would ask a reference question.

I wish I had more money.

I wish I had a plane ticket to California.

I wish my brother would just frickin' come home already.

I wish it were 6pm.

I wish I didn't have to work all the time.

I wish the election were over already.  (Corollary: I wish people would stop saying the phrase "Joe the Plumber". [yes, even you Diane Rehm.])

I wish I had time to sit down and read multiple books in a row.

I wish I had more time, period.

In six hours of work, I have had three reference questions.  I am bored out of my mind, and I can't even online shop because I have no money.  *sigh*  At least the Wings play tonight.

I have Steely Dan's "Peg" in my head, softly singing "Peg, come back to me" over and over and over.  It is driving me crazy.

I used to say that, on the whole, I didn't watch much television.  I'm revising my stance to say that I apparently watch a lot more than I think I watch, primarily because I watch it on the faux-Tivo.  At the moment, I'm making it a point to see:

Project Runway, Fringe, Pushing Daisies, The Office and Lost when it comes back.  (I wish I could see How I Met Your Mother but Dancing with the Stars and Monday Night Football preclude this, as there are only two TVs in my house and I'm usually in yoga class.)

Otherwise, I watch a lot of USA shows: The Closer, Monk, Psych, Burn Notice - my mom and I both like these, and they're good compromise views, as well as cutting down on the amount of time I have to watch faux-Tivoed Regis and Kelly.  I'll also watch Samantha Who? or Ugly Betty if they're on, but I don't follow them (these are mom shows).

I'm also interested in Dollhouse if it ever comes on (because, Joss Whedon, hello) and of course, will be watching as many Red Wings games as I can (damn you Versus!) AND wish I could be watching True Blood, but no one has HBO *sob*.

This is a lot, people.  I never used to watch television except for The X-Files and hockey games.  What is the deal?

Just read that FOX has ordered a full season of Fringe, and I'm kind of excited.  I like the show's X-Files-ish vibe, although sometimes I think it comes close to rip-off territory and doesn't have half the humour, but it's been very enjoyable so far.  Also, I like referring to the characters as Denethor, Pacey and Not-Scully.  Heh.

Also, Pushing Daisies is AWESOME and if you haven't seen it, you should start watching RIGHT NOW.  It will be the strangest and most wonderful thing you've ever seen, and also the most heartbreakingly cute.

EI - Five Gold Rings!!!

After two weeks of vainly searching every flight search engine in existence, I sucked it up, pulled out the Visa and booked my trip to Arizona.  YAY!  I'm going to visit the newly minted Mrs. Karin, Todd and Baxter.  A trip to the Grand Canyon is in the works, as well as assorted funnery.  (Om Shanti Om anyone?  Oh yes... also P&P.  Heh.)

The flight turned out okay, I get to fly out of Flint Bishop Airport (thank the gods) and I didn't give the villainous Northwest Airlines any of my cash.  Take that!

I am so excited.  Super, super excited.  I've never been out west at all, so it will be a new experience, and I can't wait to spend some quality time with Karin, whom I miss.  A lot.  Funnery will ensue!

The countdown begins... only 42 days... *squee*

PD - Disbelief!

Well, I finally succumbed and joined the demon Facebook.  You can find me there now, although I don't know how to do anything yet.  I'm taking my laptop to Rachel's on Friday and figuring the damn thing out.  Also, I'll try and do the picture thing, but I don't have that many good pictures of myself.  I will be sure to post one of my brother though, because he looks AWESOME in his kicky Navy uniform.

Not much else to report.  Am looking forward to some fall TV premieres (oh The Office it has been too long indeed!).  Am in the midst of trying to coordinate a trip to AZ to visit Karin & Todd (and see the Grand Canyon!  Huzzah!).  And that's that.

DrH - evil will win

Hello all.  Time to share a few fantastic things:

This post on GoFugYourself.  Yet another reason that I should take over Anne Hathaway's life...

This blog which I find HILARIOUS.  Do yourself a favour and read the entry on "Televisioun Without Mercy".  I giggled like a little girl.

That's it for linkage.  Not much new to report, really.  I'm now 27 years old.  Woo.  Low-key birthday celebration with the fam AND I got to hold my new cousin.  It was fantastic, although I continue to be disturbed by how much babies like me, when I'm not super keen on them.  Go figure.

Mostly just working.  A very close friend of the family passed away this week, and with Joe's death anniversary coming up the general mood is somber.

I read the entire "Twilight" series by Stephenie Meyer and definitely come down on the side of the lolfan.  They're spectacularly bad, yet strangely compelling, if only for the kickass secondary characters (Why not a book about Alice, because I kind of want to be her when I grow up?  Or a book where Bella gets punched in the face repeatedly?  Or a book that isn't anti-feminist?  Just a few suggestions...)

Also, be looking for me on Facebook soon... I think I'm finally succumbing.  Augh!

Am fairly confident the man on computer #1 is, in fact, talking to the computer.  Alternately, he could be talking to himself.  Either way, it is freaking me right the fuck out.

DrH - the hammer is...
Well, after a frantic spate of Dr. Horrible related posts, I was silenced by the weekend, and then my own ridiculousness.  Anyway.

Loved, loved, LOVED Dr. Horrible, particulary (and I'm sure this comes as no surprise) the part with Bad Horse.  WHO IS A REAL HORSE!!!!!  YES!!!!!  I can't wait for the DVD to come out, but I did buy the iTunes copies to watch at my leisure.

Saw the X-Files movie w/ Rachel.  I didn't dislike it as much as [info]obleighvious and would even say I thoroughly enjoyed portions of it, although I nearly rolled my eyes out of my cranium when I saw Scully GOOGLING for information!  Talk about a stake through the heart of a reference librarian... et tu Scully?  Regardless, I did enjoy seeing the characters onscreen and together again and the certain reappearance of a kickass character from the series.  I have renewed my dedication to becoming Dana Scully when I grow up (and perhaps naming my future cats/spawn Mulder and Scully).  Watching the movie with Rachel was probably the most fun, particularly when we'd cover our eyes and cower together (multi-headed dogs, WTF Chris Carter?!?) while squeeing.  It was just like being back in the den in her parent's old house.  Final diagnosis: I liked it for nostalgic purposes, and was happy it made me want to watch all my DVDs again (with the possible exception of TOOMS [eww eww eww]).   The review from Pajiba probably comes the closest to how I felt.

Saw "The Dark Knight" and was blown away by the acting all around, not just Heath Ledger's performance.  Batman is, and always shall be, my favourite "superhero", and I was excited to see yet another film do him justice.

Saw "Get Smart" ages ago, and probably enjoyed it more than any person should.  Giggled hysterically when they scanned past the Portable Cone of Silence.  Hee!  I can't wait for the DVDs to come out... soon!

Finished "Twilight".  I thought it was okay, but found the male protagonist to be SUPER SUPER CREEPY instead of hot, which is a major drawback.  Am on the holds list for the next one.  Yay for being a responsible librarian.

Not much else to report.  I think I've found something cute to cross stitch for Susan and Adam's behbeh (about which I still say EEE!!!).

Dr. Horrible part deux

HP - Slytherin (Minions)

Still awesome, although perhaps a bit slower (as are the middles of most trilogies).  Loved the sporks.

Giggled madly at the reappearance of the cowboy chorus/mention of Bad Horse being "The Thoroughbred of Sin".  Hee!

Best line: "The Hammer is my penis."

I need some Dr. Horrible LJ icons...  and Saturday is too far away!

Dr. Horrible!!!

PD - Yay!

Although I spent all day yesterday trying to access the site, I failed (apparently my enthusiam worked against me).  Today, however, SUCCESS!

I report back that Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog is, in fact, fantastic.  My favourite part was the cowboys singing Bad Horse's letter (*evil whinny*).  Also, keeping a straight face (and an air of entitlement about my headphones) at the reference desk was surprisingly difficult.

Joss Whedon is awesome.  Parts II and III premiere on 17 July and 19 July respectively.

XFiles - Man/Myth/Monotone

or "cried Laura".  Yesterday.  Why?

Because I had just received "Twilight" by Stephenie Meyer via ILL.  Alas.

To clarify:  I was sick of placing holds on the stupid books and making small talk about them without having read them.  Therefore, I decided it was time.  But I didn't expect the book to come so quickly!  I'm not ready!  *wail*

Other than that, nothing major to report.  Still doing everything I was 11 weeks ago (stupid LJ counter making me feel guilty for not updating).  Still torturing myself over what to do with my life.  *dramatic sigh*

I use an X-Files icon to celebrate the movie coming out on the 25th... you cannot imagine my fangirlish glee!

Scattergories

gacked from [info]obleighvious

Scattergories... it's harder than it looks!
Use the first letter of your last name to answer each of the following.
Rules:
-They have to be real places, names, things... nothing made up!
-Try to use different answers if the person in front of you had the same first initial.
-You CAN'T use your name for the boy/girl.

1.  Color  :  Khaki
2.  4-Letter Word  :  Keys
3.  Vehicle  :  Karmann Ghia
4.  City/Neighborhood  :  Kalamazoo
5.  Boy Name  :  Kurt   :)
6.  Girl Name  :  Kellie
7.  Occupation  :  Keymaker
8.  Something You Wear  :  Kerchief
9.  Food  :  Knockwurst
10.  Found in a Bathroom  :  Kohler
11.  Reason for being Late  :  Kicked
12.  Something you shout  :  KHAAN!!!
13.  Animal  :  Kangaroo
14.  Body Part  :  Knee
15.  Word to describe you :  Kickass (?!?)

The letter "K" strikes again with its ridiculousness!  I'll never forget being in Italian class and being told that the letter "K" was a foreign letter in Italian, and all the Italian words that start with "K" are borrowed from another language.  Hence the difficulty with my last name in romance-language countries.  Bah!

New news:  new car!  Picture forthcoming!
